A girl named Apryl tries to accept her family falling apart and deals with her frustration on her birthday.
While divorce is becoming more common, it remains a harsh experience for teenagers. My closest friends from high school and college were raised by single parents. I've had conversations with them about their feelings, and I've faced moments when my own parents were on the brink of divorce.
In the story, I infused a part of my personal experience. I see my mother getting trapped in her marriage. I often heard her crying and blaming, yet she chose not to leave. There might be complexities I'm unaware of, but I see a few reasons for her decision: she earned significantly less than my father, was bound by traditional morals, and wanted to provide me with a united family.
I reversed almost everything. In my story, the mother has more money and finds another man. In this way, she gains the right to make her own life decisions. Through this story, I wanted to give her more choices and show that empowerment can come from within.
